ABOUT THE REPORT AND MAP
Kelp forests depend on the right conditions, including the presence of cold waters, adequate currents, and the right salinity, light, and nutrient availability. Conditions have been changing in the Salish Sea due to climate change, and simply restoring kelp where it was known to occur may not work in the future. To understand where kelp restoration is likely to be successful, current and future environmental factors must be considered. Here, we developed a kelp habitat suitability model that considers contrasting climatic conditions to create maps to help inform restoration site selection. In the resources below is a report containing these maps, contextual and technical details, and an online map for users to explore areas of interest.
