What is the Greening the Salish Sea Project?
Estuaries and nearshore ecosystems provide vital support to juvenile and adult Pacific salmon, as well as components of their food web including Pacific herring, a critical prey species. Current interest in “greening” of our shorelines and nearshore waters is heightened by additional opportunities including potential for carbon sequestration, habitat banking, and kelp aquaculture. However, the success of projects may be hampered by a lack of knowledge on optimal site selection, a lack of collated and open-access information on efficacy of methodologies available, as well as knowledge on appropriate approaches under worsening climate change scenarios, and a lack of guidance on priority areas of restoration.
